A Radio Garden alternative for when you want a list, not a globe

Tunewide: radio stations by country, genre and mood

Why people look for a Radio Garden alternative

Radio Garden shows stations on a spinning globe, and for exploring it is hard to beat. The trouble starts when you already know what you want: a jazz station, the news in Spanish, something calm for the evening. Then a globe means a lot of dragging. Another common reason is a silent station. Some stations only stream inside their own country, and you hear nothing from anywhere else.

Tunewide is a radio alternative built around lists. You choose a country, a genre or a mood, and press play.

How Tunewide works

The catalog has 6,015 stations from 205 countries. Each country has a page, for example /countries/gb/, /countries/ua/, /countries/de/ and /countries/jp/. Each genre has one too: /genres/jazz/, /genres/news/, /genres/classical/, /genres/rock/ and /genres/lounge/.

  • No account, no app. Open the site and press play.
  • Every station is checked for a live HTTPS stream before it gets into the catalog, so pressing play should give you sound.
  • The player keeps playing while you move between pages.
  • The site is available in English, Spanish, Ukrainian and Russian.
Mood buttons suggest a station
Pick a mood and the site suggests a station.

Pick by mood instead of by place

If you do not know what to play, use the mood buttons on the home page: calm, party, morning, cafe and others. The site suggests a station. Like it or skip it, and the next suggestion adjusts. On a globe you would have to guess where the music is.

When a station stays silent

This happens on every radio site. A station may be offline, or it may block listeners from other countries. Open the country page of that station and try the next one. The country pages list stations that are live right now, so you lose a few seconds instead of a whole evening.

What Tunewide cannot do

  • It does not play stations that only offer an http stream. Browsers block those on https sites, so we leave them out.
  • It is not a music library. You get live radio, no albums on demand and no podcasts.
  • On iPhone, playback in the background with the screen locked is not reliable.
  • There is no account, so no history synced between devices.
  • It has no globe. If you like discovering stations by spinning one, Radio Garden does that and Tunewide does not.

A quick test

Open /countries/ and pick a country whose radio you have never heard. Press play on the first station with a live stream. If you would rather start from a genre, try /genres/jazz/ or /genres/ambient/. Two minutes will tell you whether a list suits you better than a globe.
